A site logistics plan used to mean one laminated sheet pinned to a trailer wall: a static top-down drawing showing gate locations, crane positions, and a laydown yard boundary that never moved no matter how many months the job ran. That approach still exists on plenty of jobs, but on complex or urban sites it leaves a gap between what the drawing shows and what the site will actually look like in month four versus month fourteen. What a Logistics Animation Actually Contains
A logistics animation is built from the same site plan and phasing drawings a project team already produces, but instead of stopping at a single snapshot, it steps through time. A typical sequence shows the site boundary, temporary fencing, access routes, crane locations and their swing radius, material laydown areas, trailer placement, parking, and pedestrian protection, each shifting as the project moves from mobilization through structural work, envelope, and closeout. Why Static Site Plans Lose the Room

Once that geometry is assembled, schedule dates drive the animation timeline, so each phase transition corresponds to an actual milestone rather than an arbitrary cut. Choreographing Cranes and Laydown Yards
Crane sequencing usually gets the most scrutiny, because it is the part most likely to reveal a conflict the drawings missed. Showing a tower crane's jib swinging through a neighboring property's airspace, or a mobile crane's outrigger footprint landing on a planned staging area, surfaces problems while they are still cheap to fix. The same applies to laydown yard sequencing: a yard sized correctly for month two can be badly undersized by month eight once multiple trades are staging material at once. Animating the yard's contents phase by phase, instead of showing one static footprint for the whole project, forces the logistics plan to account for that compression instead of assuming it away.
Where It Fits in the Pursuit Schedule
Logistics animation work needs to start earlier in the pursuit than most teams plan for. The site model, crane study, and phasing schedule all need to be reasonably firm before the animation can begin, which typically means starting the visual work two to three weeks before the proposal or interview date, not in the final days when the rest of the submittal is being assembled. Teams that treat the animation as a last-minute add-on tend to end up with a generic fly-through that shows the building but skips the logistics detail entirely. Built with enough lead time, the animation becomes a working coordination tool for the field team as well as a presentation asset, since it forces the same phase-by-phase discipline the project will need to execute against.
Getting the Scope Right Before You Start
Not every pursuit needs a full animated fly-through. A tight downtown site with tower crane conflicts, phased occupancy, and a demanding owner benefits from the full treatment. A straightforward greenfield site with one laydown area for the whole duration may only need an animated overlay on two or three phase slides. Matching the animation to the site's actual complexity keeps production realistic and keeps the reviewer's attention on the phases that matter, instead of padding the presentation with motion for its own sake.
